On this day in 1906, Tom Waring was born in High Tranmere.
Popularly known as Pongo, Waring joined Villa from Tranmere Rovers in 1928 for £4,700 – a record fee for a Third Division player.
A crowd of 23,600 turned up for his first Villa appearance – a reserve match against Birmingham City in which he scored a hat-trick – and he proved equally prolific at English football’s highest level, scoring 167 goals in 225 league and cup games for the club.
In 1930/31, he netted 49 league goals – a Villa record that is never likely to be surpassed.
