Bozzie born

On this day in 1972, Mark Bosnich was born in Fairfield, Australia.

The goalkeeper joined Villa from Sydney Croatia in February 1992, having previously had a brief spell with Manchester United, and he developed into one of the most successful – and controversial – keepers in the club’s history.

Bosnich was a member of the team that won the League Cup in 1994 and 1996, and during the 1993/94 campaign he saved eight of the nine penalties he faced, three of them in a shoot-out victory over Tranmere Rovers in the League Cup semi-final.

Best of the lot, though, was his brilliant dive to keep out Bebeto’s spot kick in a UEFA Cup tie against Deportivo La Coruna, which was described by manager Ron Atkinson as “the best save I’ve ever seen.”

His 228 Villa appearances, though, were punctuated by controversial incidents like the time he stormed out of the dressing room at Derby after learning he wasn’t in the starting line-up.

Life was never dull with Bozzie around…
