Dean Smith has recalled great memories of Aston Villa and West Bromwich Albion clashes ahead of their first meeting in three years this Friday night.

Our Head Coach grew up supporting Villa around the time of our 1981 title success, where Albion were among the frontrunners for the league crown that season.

And after a few years away, Smith is glad to have the fixture back on the calendar for supporters.

He said: "It's a big game – we've not played each other, certainly in this league, for a while.

"I grew up supporting Aston Villa in the 1980s and it meant a lot back then.

"It's not been so big in recent years due to the division we've been playing in, while the Villa-Blues derby has remerged.

"There's been some great games between ourselves and Albion, though – especially when Ron Atkinson was in charge of them in the early 80s.

"The fact we're both going for promotion I think adds extra spice on Friday. This is our third season and Albion's first after a period of success in the Premier League.

"They remain one of the favourites. We're the two top goalscorer in the division. It makes for a great match on Friday."
