Villa earned a point in a 1-1 draw against Bristol City at Ashton Gate.
Josh Onomah netted the equaliser for the visitors after Jamie Paterson had drilled City in front.
An even first 45mins was almost punctuated early on by Andre Green who tried to replicate his strike against Norwich City last weekend with a similar effort from a position on the left-hand side of the box but Frank Fielding was on hand to parry.
As the clock ticked towards half-time, Onomah blazed over from distance and Ahmed Elmohamady was denied by Fielding before Conor Hourihane scuffed a shot across goal and wide after some neat interplay.
Villa started the second half brightly, Onomah testing Fielding with a low snapshot and Keinan Davis firing off target.
Hourihane also tried his luck from the half-way line, smacking a bouncing ball goalwards but it dropped wide.
On the hour mark, City went ahead through Paterson. Villa couldn’t quite scramble a free-kick clear and the winger was in the right place to smash in the opener.
The lead would last just five minutes as the visitors hit back through Onomah.
The on-loan Tottenham man latched on to a clearance and smashed it goalwards.
The ball took a deflection off the covering Marlon Pack before looping over Fielding and into the net.
After the hosts struck the woodwork, substitute Birkir Bjarnason blasted wide as neither side could find the crucial match-winner.
