Scoring summary

Mendez-Laing (21, 70)
Hoilett (60)

Villa suffered their first defeat of the 2017/18 campaign on an afternoon to forget in the Welsh capital.

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing struck in each half, while Junior Hoilett was also on target as Cardiff maintained their 100 per cent start in the Sky Bet Championship.

Scott Hogan almost gave Villa an early lead but his effort was charged down by Bluebirds keeper Neil Etheridge.

And the visitors’ early positivity soon evaporated when Mendez-Laing’s close-range header broke the deadlock on 21 minutes after Sam Johnstone had already denied Hoilett and Kenneth Zohore.

Hoilett was left with a simple finish to double the advantage on the hour mark after Zohore’s surge down the right flank and 10 minutes later Mendez-Laing’s curling effort across goal left Johnstone well beaten.

Villa’s best second-half opportunity fell to James Chester, who headed against the bar from Henri Lansbury’s corner.
