HullVerdictStory in brief

Aston Villa came from a goal down to defeat Hull City 3-1 in their opening Sky Bet Championship encounter of the 2018/19 season.

After a nervy start which saw Evandro score for the hosts after a failed clearance, Villa made their superior quality count to claim all three points at the KCOM Stadium.

Tommy Elphick's guided header saw the claret and blues level within minutes of going behind, before Ahmed Elmohamady struck low into the bottom-left corner with 20 minutes remaining.

Alan Hutton capped victory with a hugely popular solo strike shortly after – sealing opening night victory for Steve Bruce's side.

FansHullThe football is back

After a hugely eventful summer at Villa Park, there was a common consensus among players, staff and supporters that it's great to be back in competitive action.

That was summed up perfectly by the 2,000+ travelling supporters on Monday night, who never stopped singing and chanting.

And they enjoyed what they saw on the whole, with cult hero Hutton providing their particular highlight with his goal from a mazing run.

With the future of the club now much clearer than a month ago, new signings through the door and league football back on the agenda, it's back to business for all concerned.

It's one game, one goal for Hutton since penning his new one-year contract in June.

And it wasn't just his first strike for several years that earned him recognition – he was typically forthright in attitude and quality.

Bombing down that right channel and linking well with Elmohamdy, the duo provided the catalyst for the perfect start to the campaign.

What next?

We now face Wigan Athletic at Villa Park on Saturday hoping to make it back-to-back wins to start the new season.

Before then, there's two days remaining of the summer transfer window – with the manager confirming we're likely to be busy.

Axel Tuanzebe signed on a season-long loan prior to the home match, with more names now set to arrive in the next 48 hours.

Steve Bruce

It was a bit of a strange goal to give away – a horrible goal.

But we showed character to get back into it and in the second half we improved.

But, make no mistake, we have to be better than we were tonight and I am sure we will be.

We’ve got an interesting few weeks ahead in terms of bringing a few players into the club and making the competition healthy again.

It was nice to get off to a great start.

It’s the first game of the season and we’ve got a long, long way to go.

There was good things we did in the game but we haven’t won it.

The goals we conceded were bad goals but you could see the spirit of the players.

In the cold light of day I’ll reflect on it but we played some good football at times.

The new players settled in and they’ll only get better.
