Analysis

A penalty from Shaun Williams condemned Villa to a 1-0 defeat at Millwall as the claret and blues wrapped up their regulation league campaign at the Den.

Both sides exchanged early efforts on goal in the baking bank holiday sun before the home side went in front on the half-hour mark.

The back-tracking Henri Lansbury was adjudged to have fouled Ryan Tunnicliffe as the Millwall man surged into the box and the hosts were awarded a penalty.

Shaun Williams took charge and sent Mark Bunn the wrong way from the spot.

Albert Adomah and Scott Hogan both saw half-chances cleared away while the best chance for Villa to level the scores before half-time fell to Josh Onomah who couldn’t connect properly with Adomah’s cut-back and forced a routine save from Jordan Archer.

The visitors were fastest out of the blacks after the interval with Williams’ header grazing the bar on its way over and Fred Onyedinma similarly unable to hit the target after being played in by Steve Morison.

Josh Onomah whistled a short narrowly over while Conor Hourihane repeated the feat before being denied by a flying save from Jordan Archer.

As the clock ticked towards the 90-minute mark, Millwall were presented with another opportunity from the penalty spot.

This time, Lee Gregory stepped up but saw his effort saved by the legs of Mark Bunn. As players followed in to drill home the rebound, Bunn was up quickly to divert the goal-bound ball away from danger.
