Match: Aston Villa v Birmingham City
Date: 11th February, 2018
Venue: Villa Park
Weather: 2c, sunny
Villa were in seventh heaven as a richly-deserved Second City derby success took them to second place in the Championship.
Second-half goals from Albert Adomah and Conor Hourihane clinched a seventh straight win for Steve Bruce's side - the club's best run since finishing runners-up in 1990.
Villa should have been ahead at the interval after calling the shots in the opening period.
Scott Hogan rattled the bar with a tremendous right-foot drive as well as failing to make a decent contact when well positioned on two other occasions and there were several other near misses.
Adomah's had a stinging shot pushed out by David Stockdale, and also sent a low drive just wide, while Mile Jedinak's header was cleared off the line.
Yet Blues almost went in front against the run of play when John Terry's stumble let in Sam Gallagher.
The striker's angled effort came back off the inside of the far post before he blasted the rebound high into the Holte End.
The breakthrough, ironically, followed a relatively sedate start to the second half. Jack Grealish, who caused endless problems for the visitors defence, played the ball inside from the left and Adomah's low right-foot drive went in off the inside of the post.
Villa's second followed a deep free-kick by Terry. The ball was headed away by Maxime Colin but Hourihane controlled it on his chest before sending a dipping volley over Stockdale from the edge of the penalty area.
