On the day Villa Park celebrated its 120th anniversary, Villa created an unwanted piece of club history by suffering a first-ever home league defeat at the hands of Reading.
Skipper James Chester cancelled out Joseph Mendes’ early strike with a fine header, but Mendes restored the visitors advantage just after half-time and Lewis Graggan converted a late penalty.
Villa recovered well after Mendes had fired the visitors ahead with a low right-foot shot.
Jonathan Kodjia twice went close and Reading keeper made a superb diving save from Henri Lansbury’s flick following a Mike Jedinak piledriver.
When Conor Hourihane delivered the resultant corner from the right, Chester climbed highest in a crowded goalmouth to equalise with a firm header.
Hourihane almost put Villa in front with a left-foot drive which just cleared the bar, although the Royals also looked dangerous, Sam Johnstone tipping away John Swift’s low shot before Mendes shot over from a good position.
Just 20 seconds after the interval, though, Mendes restored Reading’s lead, converting Lewis Grabban’s low cross from the right.
And Grabban converted a late penalty after Leandro Bacuna’s foul on Liam Kelly.
